Peter Rowan has been one of the most influential singers and songwriters in contemporary bluegrass for over four decades. A musical experimenter, he has blurred the boundaries between old-time country, folk, reggae, blues and rock styles, and has even received some notoriety recently on the jam band circuit. Peter has played with everyone from Bill Monroe to Jerry Garcia, and his recent collaboration with guitarist Tony Rice has brought him renewed critical acclaim. The fifteen original songs in this book form a thread through Peter Rowan's musical life. They range from love songs to social commentary, dreamlike inspirational tunes to his signature bluegrass-tinged showstoppers. All the songs are gems. You'll enjoy playing and singing them for years to come. The book includes tablature (when appropriate), chord shapes and complete lead sheets so you can play the song the way Peter does. You'll also find separate lyric sheets, a complete discography and poetic tributes to this wonderful American artist. As a bonus, Peter has recorded a CD on which he demonstrates each song and, in his distinctive and inspiring manner, provides musical pointers and insights into its background. Panama Red; Bluegrass Boy;
High Lonesome Sound; Midnight Moonlight; Pulling the Devil by the Tail;
Wild Geese Cry Again; Ruby Ridge; Before the Streets Were Paved; Electric
Blanket; On the Wings of Horses; I Dreamed of a Home; Faith, Love and
Devotion; Let the Harvest Go to Seed; Fetch Wood, Carry Water; Dust Bowl
Children. |

— Legendary musical icons tour in support of their Rounder Records
release, NASHVILLE, TN, April, 2005 — Two of the most influential musicians in American music recently released their first full-fledged album together on Rounder Records. You Were There For Me is the result of two gifted masters of their craft, Peter Rowan and Tony Rice. A true duet collection in every sense of the word, it features Rowan’s sublime vocals on ten original compositions, and guitar virtuoso Rice’s characteristically elegant and remarkable instrumental work. Touring together in support of You Were There For Me, Rowan and Rice perform live as the Peter Rowan & Tony Rice Quartet. Rising-star string bassist and Quartet member Bryn Bright (Old & In The Gray, Jim Lauderdale, Shawn Camp, Tony Rice Unit) guested on the CD and has been performing live with Rowan and Rice playing double bass and singing harmony since the tour’s inception in September, 2004. The Quartet’s newest member is Texas native and Santa Fe resident Sharon Gilchrist, who has replaced Billy Bright on mandolin. An accomplished multi-instrumentalist, Gilchrist also plays bass in the all-girl Old Time stringband Uncle Earl, and writes, sings and plays mandolin in her own bluegrass trio Mary & Mars, as well. The new Rowan & Rice Quartet lineup is magical as, in addition to her inspired contributions on mandolin, Gilchrist’s harmony vocals have added a new dimension to the songs on You Were There For Me, which are now performed in three-part harmony for the first time. Rowan and Rice have spent their respective careers creating and transforming music with their renowned innovation and individuality. Both are also at ease in a broad variety of musical genres, as well as widely recognized for expanding musical boundaries in their respective solo and collaborative efforts. ### For booking, contact: Keith Case

** Press Release ** April 28, 2004 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PETER ROWAN PLAYS CRUCIAL REGGAE NASHVILLE, TN —Longtime bluegrass and folk icon Peter Rowan is well known for continuing to expand his own musical horizons, as well as those of his loyal audience, by incorporating a wide range of musical styles in his recordings and live performances. His career has encompassed a variety of musical genres from Tex-Mex to old-time country, Celtic, rock and roll, jazz fusion and world music. His most recent musical excursion has led him on a journey to Jamaica, on a path culminating in the CD release, Peter Rowan Reggaebilly! Recorded at Jamaica’s famed Tuff Gong Studios, it boasts an impressive array of hardcore reggae and bluegrass musicians, including Chinna Smith, Squidley Cole, Robbie Lynn, Chris Livingston, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, and Eddie Adcock. The record’s melding of reggae and bluegrass was influenced by the island’s Celtic-Christian hymns and African chants. Commenting on the genesis of the record, Rowan explains, “My aspiration is to bring the heartbeat message and traditions of roots reggae ever forward, beyond race or religion. Reggae music fills me with dauntless encouragement, spiritual vitality and boundless gratitude – the same feelings I want to inspire in my audience when they hear me play this music.” Currently touring as Peter Rowan’s Crucial Reggae, Rowan is performing upcoming dates across the U.S., featuring a revolving band of serious reggae players, including Tony Chin, Fully Fullwood, Don Grant and Ras Ijinga. For their upcoming performance on April 29, 2004 at The Trap in Nashville, TN, Peter Rowan’s Crucial Reggae has an extraordinary nine-piece line-up that includes the aforementioned notable players and trumpet player Ephraim Owens, plus members of the renowned Burning Spear horn section, featuring Charles Dickey on trombone and Mark Wilson on saxaphone. Grammy-award winner and five-time Grammy nominee, Peter Rowan was born in Massachusetts to a musical family. He began his professional career playing guitar, singing lead vocals and co-writing as member of the Bluegrass Boys, led by the founding father of bluegrass, Bill Monroe. After his departure as Monroe’s guitarist and lead vocalist, Rowan formed folk-rock band Earth Opera with David Grisman, recording two successful albums for Elektra Records, subsequently joining Richard Greene in jazz-rock fusion group Sea Train. In the early '70s, Rowan, David Grisman, Jerry Garcia, Vassar Clements and John Kahn formed a bluegrass band christened Old & In Way. Rowan embarked on a well-received solo career in the late ‘70s, releasing such diverse and critically acclaimed albums, as Dustbowl Children and Bluegrass Boy, as well as collaborations with ace dobro player Jerry Douglas, Flaco Jimenez, and his brothers Christopher and Lorin Rowan. Rowan’s songs have also been recorded by hit country artists and featured in motion pictures, and his new CD with flat-pick acoustic guitar virtuoso Tony Rice is due for release on Rounder Records in September, 2004. -For booking, contact: Keith Case & Associates, 1025 17th Avenue

| Written and directed by Michael Grice; musical direction by Peter Rowan. Merle Haggard probably coined the phrase in the early ‘50s when asked to describe the music of The Maddox Brothers and Rose: “Well, they’re not really hillbilly and they’re not really rock and roll…I guess you’d call them rock-a-hillbilly.” The first inductees into the Rock-a-Billy Hall of Fame, Rose and her brothers almost single-handedly created this new musical genre combining old fashion “thump and jump” sounds of the South with the vigor and brashness of the West Coast. Their energetic sound, cornball comedy, and wild costumes may have offended the Nashville elite but the audiences loved it. By the mid ‘50s, Nashville artists like Hank Williams and Ernest Tubb not only followed the Maddox sound but started dressing like them, too! From Johnny Cash to Janis Joplin, legends of American music continued to acknowledge the Maddox Brothers and Rose for their sound. Generating the same high energy and colorful characters, Mad. Bros. & Rose recreates the rowdy and boisterous radio and stage shows that made these wild pioneers of American music so unforgettable. This is a World Premiere event destined to travel the same road to success as Smoke on the Mountain and Pump Boys and Dinettes.

Crazy People
Excerpt of a review from Maverick Magazine: "You just have to love it! It’s bluegrass with a twinkle in the eye, possibly. Or good, old fashioned all-singing, all dancing Vaudeville entertainment, maybe. Or just good songs and great playing. Whatever, it’s the return of Peter Rowan, one of country music’s maverick greats, whether playing music from the mountains or the Mexican borderlands. Here he links up as a trio again with brothers Lorin and Chris, with whom he started his career many moons ago, for guitar picking and, in particular, harmonies to stop the world."
