Peter Rowan's Days of the Dead in Oaxaca, Mexico
Oct 28 - Nov 6 2008
Dear Fans and Friends of Peter Rowan,
My name is Joan Griffith and I will be organizing Peter's
"Days of the Dead" trip to Oaxaca, Mexico. Below you'll
find a list of most of our activities for this trip starting Oct
28th 08 to Nov 6th 08.
We will be staying in a lovely villa outside the city of Oaxaca.
The rooms are charming ,handmade, and comfortable. We will have
our own chef so our meals will be organic, gluten-free and extremely
delicious. As part of our events, some meals will be in restaurants
that are clean and interestingly ethnic.
We can accommodate only 12 people on this trip. This
will give folks a lot of individual time with Peter while seeing
the ancient Meso-American world in a new way. The evenings will
be free to play music and write songs, except for the two nights
of the Dead, which we will spend in grave yards and cemeteries
to join the Oaxacan people in welcoming and enjoying their relationships
with their ancestors. This experience is truly unique and
has changed many people's view of life and death. Spending this
special time with Peter will be a wonderful opportunity for personal
growth and just plain fun.
The trip will cost $ 2100.00 for the 10 days and will cover lodging,
food, ground transportation, guides, entry fees, and cocktails at
the villa. Not covered are: airfare and alcohol drinks in restaurants.
We can help with flights if needed. We usually fly from Houston
(IAH) to Oaxaca because it is the only direct flight to Oaxaca from
the U.S.
We can accept reservations starting immediately, and we request
a deposit of $ 500.00 to secure your place. We can accept credit
cards. If you need to speak to a human (still living) about
this please try 1-512-797-9559 or 1-512-327-9660. You can
e-mail us at wildwoodartcafe@gmail.com,
and you could look us up on the web, www.wildwoodartcafe.com

Release Date: January 23, 2007
January 16, 2007
Dear Friends and Fans of Peter Rowan,
We are delighted to announce the February 23 release of the Peter
Rowan and Tony Rice Quartet recording on Rounder Records. Entitled
Quartet, this recording contains outstanding performances by Peter
and Tony along with Sharon Gilchrist and Bryn Davies recording fresh
renditions of old favorites like "Walls of Time" and "Dust
Bowl Children" along with cover recordings of such contemporary
material as Patti Smith's "Trespasses" Townes Van Zandt's
"To Live Is To Fly" and Peter's "Perfection".
No Depression Magazine's January-February issue hails Quartet as
"an album that sounds at once ancient and timelessŠ."
In case Peter's other recent release has passed you by, Crucial
Country is a live recording of Peter Rowan, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush,
Viktor Krauss, Larry Atamanuik and Kester Smith from the Telluride
Bluegrass Festival.
"Tales of the devil, temptation, love and infidelity come
to life over acoustic strings and stripped down percussion, stand-up
bass and sweet syrupy dobro, all poured into a perfectly crafted,
jam-filled set list. It's proof that while studio sessions and sheet
music may last forever, an artist's best work is often fleeting-
and fresh."
- Matt Walker, Relix Magazine
With kind regards,
A Train Entertainment

| FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
— Legendary musical icons tour in support of their Rounder
Records release,
You Were There For Me, with new member Sharon Gilchrist on mandolin
—
NASHVILLE, TN, April, 2005 —
Two of the most influential musicians in American music recently
released their first full-fledged album together on Rounder Records.
You Were There For Me is the result of two gifted masters of their
craft, Peter Rowan and Tony Rice.
A true duet collection in every sense of the word, it features Rowan’s
sublime vocals on ten original compositions, and guitar virtuoso
Rice’s characteristically elegant and remarkable instrumental
work.
Touring together in
support of You Were There For Me, Rowan and Rice perform live as
the Peter Rowan & Tony Rice Quartet. Rising-star string bassist
and Quartet member Bryn Bright (Old & In The Gray, Jim Lauderdale,
Shawn Camp, Tony Rice Unit) guested on the CD and has been performing
live with Rowan and Rice playing double bass and singing harmony
since the tour’s inception in September, 2004.
The Quartet’s
newest member is Texas native and Santa Fe resident Sharon
Gilchrist, who has replaced Billy Bright on mandolin. An
accomplished multi-instrumentalist, Gilchrist also plays bass in
the all-girl Old Time stringband Uncle Earl, and writes, sings and
plays mandolin in her own bluegrass trio Mary & Mars, as well.
The new Rowan &
Rice Quartet lineup is magical as, in addition to her inspired contributions
on mandolin, Gilchrist’s harmony vocals have added a new dimension
to the songs on You Were There For Me, which are now performed in
three-part harmony for the first time.
Rowan and Rice have
spent their respective careers creating and transforming music with
their renowned innovation and individuality. Both are also at ease
in a broad variety of musical genres, as well as widely recognized
for expanding musical boundaries in their respective solo and collaborative
efforts.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PETER ROWAN PLAYS CRUCIAL REGGAE
—The folk and bluegrass legend explores pure reggae with typical
vitality and mastery—
NASHVILLE, TN —Longtime
bluegrass and folk icon Peter Rowan is well known for continuing
to expand his own musical horizons, as well as those of his loyal
audience, by incorporating a wide range of musical styles in his
recordings and live performances. His career has encompassed a variety
of musical genres from Tex-Mex to old-time country, Celtic, rock
and roll, jazz fusion and world music.
His most recent musical
excursion has led him on a journey to Jamaica, on a path culminating
in the CD release, Peter Rowan Reggaebilly! Recorded at Jamaica’s
famed Tuff Gong Studios, it boasts an impressive array of hardcore
reggae and bluegrass musicians, including Chinna Smith, Squidley
Cole, Robbie Lynn, Chris Livingston, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan,
and Eddie Adcock. The record’s melding of reggae and bluegrass
was influenced by the island’s Celtic-Christian hymns and
African chants.
Commenting on the genesis
of the record, Rowan explains, “My aspiration is to bring
the heartbeat message and traditions of roots reggae ever forward,
beyond race or religion. Reggae music fills me with dauntless encouragement,
spiritual vitality and boundless gratitude – the same feelings
I want to inspire in my audience when they hear me play this music.”
Currently touring as
Peter Rowan’s Crucial Reggae, Rowan is performing upcoming
dates across the U.S., featuring a revolving band of serious reggae
players, including Tony Chin, Fully Fullwood, Don Grant and Ras
Ijinga. For their upcoming performance on April 29, 2004 at The
Trap in Nashville, TN, Peter Rowan’s Crucial Reggae has an
extraordinary nine-piece line-up that includes the aforementioned
notable players and trumpet player Ephraim Owens, plus members of
the renowned Burning Spear horn section, featuring Charles Dickey
on trombone and Mark Wilson on saxaphone.
Grammy-award winner
and five-time Grammy nominee, Peter Rowan was born in Massachusetts
to a musical family. He began his professional career playing guitar,
singing lead vocals and co-writing as member of the Bluegrass Boys,
led by the founding father of bluegrass, Bill Monroe. After his
departure as Monroe’s guitarist and lead vocalist, Rowan formed
folk-rock band Earth Opera with David Grisman, recording two successful
albums for Elektra Records, subsequently joining Richard Greene
in jazz-rock fusion group Sea Train. In the early '70s, Rowan, David
Grisman, Jerry Garcia, Vassar Clements and John Kahn formed a bluegrass
band christened Old & In Way.
Rowan embarked on a
well-received solo career in the late ‘70s, releasing such
diverse and critically acclaimed albums, as Dustbowl Children and
Bluegrass Boy, as well as collaborations with ace dobro player Jerry
Douglas, Flaco Jimenez, and his brothers Christopher and Lorin Rowan.
Rowan’s songs have also been recorded by hit country artists
and featured in motion pictures, and his new CD with flat-pick acoustic
guitar virtuoso Tony Rice is due for release on Rounder Records
in September, 2004.

(From Homespun
Tapes)
One of America’s
greatest bluegrass musicians has made a lesson that will help you
improve your singing and strengthen your rhythm guitar playing.
Peter Rowan imparts wisdom and advice based on decades of experience
playing with bands from Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys to Old
and In the Way.
You’ll
gain unique insights into Peter Rowan’s instrumental and singing
style, which will, in turn, help you in your own musical development.
Through his thoughtful instruction you’ll improve your lead
singing and learn invaluable tips on breathing, phrasing, vocal
improvisation, and how to achieve the “high lonesome”
bluegrass sound. Peter gives you exercises for increasing your power
and range, and builds your awareness of what you need to do to develop
a strong vocal sound.
|
A top-notch guitarist as well as a great singer, Peter teaches the
basics of guitar accompaniment for bluegrass songs. He shows you
how to back up your singing with a strong sense of time, strumming
full chords with the pick and adding bluegrass style bass runs (including
variations on the famous “G run”). You’ll also
learn to pick simple but effective solos to a variety of songs,
and establish an authentic bluegrass guitar sound.

Written and directed by Michael Grice; musical direction
by Peter Rowan. Merle Haggard probably coined the phrase
in the early ‘50s when asked to describe the music of The
Maddox Brothers and Rose: “Well, they’re not really
hillbilly and they’re not really rock and roll…I guess
you’d call them rock-a-hillbilly.” The first inductees
into the Rock-a-Billy Hall of Fame, Rose and her brothers almost
single-handedly created this new musical genre combining old fashion
“thump and jump” sounds of the South with the vigor
and brashness of the West Coast. Their energetic sound, cornball
comedy, and wild costumes may have offended the Nashville elite
but the audiences loved it. By the mid ‘50s, Nashville artists
like Hank Williams and Ernest Tubb not only followed the Maddox
sound but started dressing like them, too! From Johnny Cash to
Janis Joplin, legends of American music continued to acknowledge
the Maddox Brothers and Rose for their sound. Generating the same
high energy and colorful characters, Mad. Bros. & Rose recreates
the rowdy and boisterous radio and stage shows that made these
wild pioneers of American music so unforgettable. This is a World
Premiere event destined to travel the same road to success as
Smoke on the Mountain and Pump Boys and Dinettes.
This show is presented by Pacific Alliance Stage Co.

Excerpt of a review from Maverick Magazine:
"You just have to love it! It’s bluegrass
with a twinkle in the eye, possibly. Or good, old fashioned all-singing,
all dancing Vaudeville entertainment, maybe. Or just good songs
and great playing. Whatever, it’s the return of Peter Rowan,
one of country music’s maverick greats, whether playing music
from the mountains or the Mexican borderlands. Here he links up
as a trio again with brothers Lorin and Chris, with whom he started
his career many moons ago, for guitar picking and, in particular,
harmonies to stop the world." Click
